Bio: Miles Borrero
PROJECT: Bio, style and course rewrite
CLIENT: Miles Borrero
MY ROLE: Write bio, teaching style and edit course offerings for yoga teacher Miles Borrero.
Meet Miles Borrero, yoga teacher, Master of the Fine Arts, skateboarder, horseback rider, former-actor, ex-rocker, harmonium hugger and lover, shape-shifter and peaceful warrior. Born in Sao Paolo, Brazil and raised in Bogota, Colombia, Miles is currently based in NYC where she can be found teaching regular classes at Pure Yoga and Kula Yoga Project.
Coming from a classical yoga background, Miles embraces its rigor- maintaining all of the traditional elements of a yoga practice, yet with the essence of a jazz musician. Her yoga is pulled apart and reconstructed, then twisted around and flipped on its head for an artful, enlivened experience. Through her own devoted practice, Miles has probably spent more time on her hands in the last few years than she has on her feet, allowing her to instruct a vinyasa flow filled with arm balances and inversions from a learned place. Through her studies in Feldenkrais, Middendorf, the Alexander Technique, Thai Massage and other healing arts she has finessed what it means to sense through your hands.
Borrero leads retreats and teacher trainings both nationally and internationally and her unique teaching style has not escaped notice--Miles has recently been featured in publications including Om Yoga and Mantra. Deeply influenced by and eternally grateful to all of her teachers (Raghunath, Ana Forrest, Schuyler Grant and Phillip Askew among others), she believes yoga is an integrated science, art and practice meant to help us know and love ourselves better and more freely.
Miles Borrero’s highly creative yoga sequences are enriched with singing, sprinkled with pranayama and meditation, supported by dharma and fused together with a vast knowledge of the body. Offering an intelligent take on the practice while still respecting the tradition of it, Miles creates that sweet spot where opposing forces find balance in perfect dynamic tension.
Miles’ playful spark of curiosity in exploring new things makes her the perfect copilot as she takes you on a journey. Through the lens of a devoted personal practice, good architecture combines with articulate cueing, asking you to tune into the more subtle aspects of the body. Miles will help you deconstruct and put back together your body, mind and heart. Students move through a myriad of shapes and ideas designed to create more space and freedom in their practice. Sing, play, fall, find yourself in poses you never knew existed. Rest assured that even if you get lost, you will be found and as Miles likes to encourage her students --- "getting lost is good for you anyways."
Coupled with artistic sequences and juicy assists, Miles’ infectiously warm personality, sense of humor, and spiritual yet non-dogmatic approach to the practice will keep you coming back for more. Her sweet voice and magnetic harmonium jams pull you into savasana. Be prepared to feel as if you’ve just gone to “yoga church”--leaving lighter, joyful, part of a community and having called to your higher Self.
Air Lab: 101
Are you feeling like you want to take your practice off the ground and into the air? But not quite ready to lift the wheels and charter your own plane through your practice? Start to organize the chaos and build a sound structure with the solid foundation of good alignment that comes from stacking the bones properly. Work at the wall, with each other and in the middle of the room to build strength and confidence in being upside down. And unlike flying an actual plane, crash landings are welcomed and encouraged! You'll learn just as much from those moments as you do when you find that sweet spot of catching some air time.
All levels; beginners welcome.
Chock full of funky inversions, arm balances, juicy pranayama, backbends, twists, and rare seated poses, this class has been specifically crafted for you, yoga freaks and geeks. Like any extraordinary musician, we do our scales and we rehearse; we come to our mats and take great care to learn clear alignment, refine our breaths and allow our bodies to become supple and strong. You've done all the work. Now what? Get out of your own way. Seize the opportunity for unadulterated, uncensored play. Caution: this class might be accompanied by the sweet sounds of the harmonium so you may feel an inexplicable sense of santosha and lightness after class.
Arm Balances: A-Z
If you are newer to spending time on your hands, are having trouble catching the balance, or even if it scares you, come! Arm balances have more to do with balance and alignment than strength. Much like any building or piece of architecture, if you stack the bones up properly and create a good foundation, the rest will follow. Miles will break arm balances down and go through the canon, A-Z. We will explore fun, safe, aligned ways to begin or continue what you've already started. Get to see things--literally--from a new perspective.
All levels; beginners welcome.
Arm Balances: Unplugged
This class introduces us to the vast, sometimes unknown, world of arm balances--digging into the rare and weird. Explore the arm balances you know and love, and move them into lesser known shapes. Learn to transition in and out of them in creative and fun ways then flip them upside down, adding some inverting to the mix. You might think this will make inversions harder, but it really helps to have different destinations when you are flying.
The Rare & The Weird: Inversions and Hips
In this workshop we will move deep into hip-town: play with lotus, foot-behind-head and arm balance variations. And then take the whole thing upside-down! Expect a playful, creative experience with hip-opening and the exploration of poses and shapes rarely taught in a regular asana class. This yummy, smoldering practice will leave you more than ready for your Saturday night dance party.
All levels. Note: includes inversions.
**Asana: Unplugged (Master Class)**
This master class is a riff on classical yoga with the pulse of jazz. Experience the basic human right to move in ways you never thought you could, uncovering the richness and depth of our essence. Miles will guide you with playfulness and smart alignment into fancy binds and big backbends. Deconstruct and rebuild the poses you are familiar with for a holistic experience that encompasses dharma, asana, kirtan, pranayama and the unexpected. It’s yoga twisted on its head, and will leave you buzzing with energy and connecting the purest expression of joy and calm. Laugh, smile, fall over, roll around, have a party, lose yourself, find yourself, and put the missing pieces back together.

Forget about being perfect and let yourself get lost in the experience as asana, pranayama, chanting, stories, and live music are weaved together to create a magical, feel good class. Tap into both your physical and spiritual dharma as you ride the percussion of your breath to come together and create a space of community, life and dynamism.

Heart over Head: Backbends and Inversions
Backbends can be scary and intense as we unsheathe our hearts and drop into the space behind us: the unknown. As such, backbends make a dynamic playmate for inversions, which require courage, playfulness and willingness to explore. We are truly and actively learning to surrender, as these practices ultimately limit what we can control. Begin with a challenging, creative flow to warm up the body in a way that is organic and mindful so our peak poses feel delicious. A smoldering experience of entering backbends and inversions whether you are building the pose from the ground up, or dropping it back. The flow will be accompanied by sweet chants on the harmonium. You may walk out a bit lighter and more available. It's a risky proposition, but might be worth it.
